Bienvenue!
Welcome to your French course! My name is Heidi Hanks. The 2017-2018 school year will be my 8th year teaching at Elder High School and my 14th year teaching high school French.
I use this site to introduce myself, to list student assignments, to distribute documents, and to share useful links.
I grew up in Solon, Ohio, which is a Cleveland suburb. I attended Solon High School (class of 1999) and moved to Cincinnati to attend Xavier University. At XU, I majored in English and in French. These were the subjects that inspired me most as a high school student. I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Pau, France during the summer of 2001.
After graduating with my BA in English (2003), I decided to pursue a career in secondary education. I am passionate about French language and culture and I desired work that would keep me involved in French. I also love communication, collaboration, and seeing students grow and achieve. I enrolled at UC and earned a master’s degree in secondary education (2005). My master’s level coursework gave me a foundation in language teaching methods and gave me the opportunity to study learning and teaching.
After graduating from UC, I began work as a French teacher at McAuley High School (2005-2007). I then taught at Wilmington High School (2007-2011) before beginning at Elder in the fall of 2011.
As a teacher at Elder, I am happy to work with diverse and talented faculty, staff, and students every day. My goal is to inspire a love of learning and a love of language in my students. We learn so much about our own language and culture
through the study of another. I hope to encourage my students to make these connections.
Last summer, I moved from West Chester to Westwood with my husband, stepson, and pets (1 cat and 2 dogs). We are happy to be in Westwood and we are having a lot of fun exploring our new neighborhood. I love to read, cook, walk, travel, spend time with family and friends, and watch French movies. I look forward to seeing new and familiar faces this school year!
